Picnic at the Park group - Too cold to be outside today, so we will meet at the north church, up on the hill on the north side of Hurricane. It's the 2/7/8 ward building. The address is 155 E. 1050 N.

Lots of moms have expressed an interest in moving our Picnic at the Park up to the Hall Family Park (aka the Middle School Park) for the winter. Today we will meet there. Noon. Potluck. Be there or be square.

We are the Picnic at the Park playgroup. Every Tuesday at noon, we gather at the Hurricane City Park (Main Street and 200 North) for a potluck luncheon. The moms have a chance to get out of the house and have a little adult conversation, and the kids get to have some outside activity and socialization. It is a potluck, so bring a dish to share with the group. We are not picky about what you bring, we're just happy to have you join us. Don't forget to bring your own plates, utensils, etc. We have a different group every time, depending on who is able to come, but our group comes from all over Hurricane. Look for us with the red checkered tablecloths, and we'll look forward to seeing you there.

Red Cliffs Recreation Area

9am - I called around, and it seems to be a busy day for everybody. There will likely not be anyone going this morning. Sorry.

Today we will be going to Red Cliffs Recreation Area, near Harrisburg, UT. The plan is to do a little climbing on the rocks, and then splash in the small creek that winds through the campground. Wear shoes/clothes that will work for hiking/climbing, but also bring/wear something appropriate for getting a little wet. There are facilities available. Bring a lunch for your group. If you wish to caravan, meet at the red church (300 S. 100 W.) at 9:30. The cost is $2 per car, according to the website. Playgroup 7/21 : No Sheep Bridge - splash pad instead!

Due to concerns for safety in regards to late, heavy run-off, the trip to Sheep Bridge has been cancelled. We will instead meet at the new Hurricane Splash Pad at the Hurricane Community Center at 10am. This is a small splash pad with a nearby playground, a covered pavilion, and restrooms. Bring lunch for your bunch, be sure to protect against the sun, and plan on getting wet. See you there!

Thursday Playgroup - June 16

Today we go to Littlefield Park (out in the Littlefield area of St. George off of River Road. See the map in the calendar for address and directions.) This is a park with a splash pad, lots of grass, and a playground full of unique play equipment. There is a restroom and water, but little shade, as the trees are still very young. Bring shade if you can, clothes to get wet in, towels, sunscreen, and a lunch for your bunch. See you there!

Thursday Playgroup - June 9

Pioneer Park in St. George and Nisson Park in Washington. This activity is always a favorite. We start by climbing in the rocks at the park with "Dixie" painted on the rock above St. George. It's hot with very little shade. There are no facilities, but there is a port-a-potty. Bring water and hats/sunscreen. Around 11:30, we'll adjourn to Nisson Park in Washington City to eat and splash in the ditch. Bring lunch for your bunch and towels/dry clothes. (Addresses and map direction on the calendar below.) Meet at the red church at 9:30 to caravan. See you there!

Summer Begins!!!

It's time for summer Thursday Playgroup again! Yippeee!! For our first trip we are going to go out to Colorado City to the park on Canyon Street. This is a park with grass and picnic tables, a ball field and a playground with sand. There are horseshoe pits and lots of hiking in the surrounding hills for the older kids. Bring lawn games and balls, and a blanket to lay out on the grass if you want to. Sunscreen is advised. There are bathroom facilities available.
To join in a caravan, meet at the red church (corner of 100 W. and 300 S. in Hurricane) at 9:30am on Thursday, June 2. All who meet there will drive together to Colorado City. If you want to go on your own and meet the group there, there is a map attached to the event on the calendar at the bottom of the blog. The weather forecast calls for cold and wind for the next few days, so tomorrow's picnic at the park (11/23) will be at the red brick church house (corner of 100 W. and 300 S.) We'll see you there at noon or fairly soon thereafter.

Hey, moms, due to illness, vacations, and other issues we are going to cancel this last day of Thursday Playgroup. Please pass the word on to anyone you can think of. A few weeks ago we had one of our first sunny days. It would have been perfect except for a nippy breeze. Despite the brrr factor we all enjoyed our dose of vitamin D.

Nickel Auction Flashback

Thanks to the gals that accepted the invitation to join in our auction action. To see if you're in pictures I took that night click here. We had very positive feedback on our evening. We might make a few tweaks here and there, but I think another auction a few months down the road is in the works. So watch for the invite.

Granola Bar Recipe

These are the granola bars Sara made. I wanted the recipe, so if anyone else would like it, here it is. If you click the Mother Earth News link, it has some fun variations, too.

Granola Bars
from Mother Earth News
2½ cups rolled oats (old-fashioned or instant)
1 cup shredded coconut
1/2 cup raw sunflower seeds
1/4 cup sesame seeds
1/2 cup wheat germ
1/2 cup slivered almonds
4 tablespoons butter or margarine
1/4 cup dark brown sugar
1/2 cup honey
1 cup raisins
2 teaspoons vanilla extract

While your oven is preheating to 300°F, spread the oats, coconut, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, wheat germ and almonds evenly on a 9" x 12" baking sheet. Bake these dry ingredients for 20 minutes, stirring them occasionally.

Meanwhile, heat the butter (or margarine), brown sugar and honey in a small saucepan, allowing the brew to simmer until the oat mixture is ready to come out of the oven. (If you or yours like really crispy granola, bake the dry ingredients an additional few minutes.) As soon as the oat mixture is out, add the raisins, stirring them into the other ingredients.

Now remove the honey from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract, then pour the hot liquid over the oat mixture and stir until all the dry ingredients are coated.

Next, press the granola firmly into the bottom of a greased 8" x 8" pan and place it in the still-warm oven to bake (at the same 300°F as before) for 20 minutes. (An 8" x 8" pan makes bars about an inch thick; if you want thinner bars, use a slightly larger pan.)

When you remove the granola from the oven, allow it to cool only slightly before cutting it into squares, but wait until it's completely cool before removing the bars from the pan.

You order Tuesday or Wednesday, and then you go pick it up at the theater on Saturday morning. It goes every other week, and it is going this week because we are switching from the A week to the B week. Details are at the site. My most recent basket included:

Bad Weather Alternative Location

Sometimes the weather is too much for us to have Picnic at the Park...at the park. In this case we meet at the red brick church on the corner of 300 S. and 100 W. in Hurricane. It has a carpeted gym (I know, weird) and we know someone who has a key (congrats on your new calling, Candy!) So this is our alternative space. We usually only do this when the wind is blowing, because it's hard to eat off of paper plates in the wind. It almost never gets too cold to force us indoors due solely to temperature, but it does happen occasionally. So if you get to the park and no one is there by about 10 minutes after noon, check for us at the alternative location. Picnic at the Park at the Church. See you there!!

Location change for Picnic at the Park

The time has come to change location for Picnic at the Park back to the park by the middle school. The address is on 200 W at approximately 400 N. It's easy to find, and if you have any questions, please call Jennifer (635-9138) or Candy (635-9468). This location is fenced and gated, so it's easier to contain the little ones who like to wander into the street. We used the city park in the summer because of the mature trees and shade, but we are glad to move back to this more controlled location. Please let anyone you can think of know about this change (anyone you may have invited in the past, anyone you know who only shows up once in a while, anyone you think would like to come.) See you there on Tuesday at noon!!!

Change of event for Aug. 6

Please note that we have changed the event for August 6. We are planning a repeat of the Sheep Bridge outing we attempted earlier in the summer. As no one was available on that date, we wanted to try again because it really is a fun play activity. All information is on the calendar. Change of location for Picnic in the Park (Tuesdays)

We have decided to meet at the city park (corner of Main Street and 200 North) for Picnic at the Park (Tuesdays at noon) for an indefinite period of time. It just seems to be cooler there, with all the trees and grass, and the drinking fountains work. It seems to work out better in the heat. Sorry if we've missed you at the other park. We are a little behind in getting things posted. Please join us at the Hurricane City Park!!
